Hononegah High School wrapped up their last School Board Meeting of 2016 Wednesday, Dec. 21 at 7 p.m. in the school’s library. Physical Education Department coordinator and teacher, Michelle Broderick gave a brief presentation on their year in review. Broderick talked about a new program they just incorporated called WELNET. It’s a web-based program to help teachers, students and parents access the student’s fitness records from kindergarten all the way through twelfth grade. “It’ll be something unique and special, as we get more involved in it,” Broderick said. “It gives students independence, it allows them to go in and do a personalized fitness test. They can go in and look at the data and set up smart goals and track their progress. It allows us as teachers to do some unique things, such as customization. I can, as a teacher, put in an assessment outside of class to reinforce what we did in class that day.” She said their hope within the next year is to have students have access to these files at home. “It gives us the ability to reinforce students learning in class, outside of class. It gives the ability for students and parents to access all their fitness data. It gives us the ability with our state mandate reporting to have access to all of their fitness tracking.” Right now the program is only accessed at school.

The Board recognized a Hononegah Senior, Tengi Shiga, for winning the International Model UN (United Nations) Conference. Model UN is an organization that let’s students come together to act out as other powerful leaders of the UN to debate about economic and political issues. “It’s basically conferences held for kids interested in foreign diplomacy and politics. They get together and kind of nerd out,” Shiga said. “We get together in large groups and discuss political issues and economic issues as people in those countries.” Shiga is the President for the school’s Model UN Club now, and has been a member since it first started. “I’ve been a part of (Model UN Club) since the very beginning and I’m really proud of that,” Shiga said. “I didn’t know if I was going to like it or not, but I found it interesting. I kept showing up and giving it a try, and I realized it was something that I really enjoyed doing.” After winning a Conference in Chicago, Shiga was offered to be part of the All American Model UN Team. Over Thanksgiving break, she traveled to Budapest where she competed in the Yale Model Government Europe Model UN Conference. She took home first place. The Board honored Shiga with a certificate of congratulations, presented by President David Kurlinkus. Shiga hopes to attend a University after high school and double major in economics and political science. They also honored a Hononegah teacher, Brad Christoff. He is an economics teacher who was nominated as WREX teacher of the week back in November.

In other School Board news, another meeting will be held on Jan. 9 to talk further about the referendum and what their plans are for it. Kurlinkus said he thinks the school semester went well. The only issue they have to worry about now is their lack of space due to the dome caving in last year. “Hononegah has pretty high expectations and is a high performing school. It always has been since I’ve been up here,” Kurlinkus said. “The big thing now is what we are going to do now because our referendum went down a sizable amount. That would’ve helped replace the dome with a regular field house. The big thing now is we need more space, because our P.E. classes now have to double up, and our sports teams are packed in one gym for practice or they are farmed out to other facilities.”
