The Forest Preserves of Winnebago County (FPWC) invites the public to their annual free fishing event Hooked on Fun Kid’s Fishing Derby taking place on Saturday, June 14 at Four Lakes Forest Preserve, located at 10207 Fish Hatchery Road in Pecatonica. Participant registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. the day of the event and the event will run from 9 to 11 a.m.

The Hooked on Fun Kid’s Fishing Derby introduces kids to the outdoor hobby of ethical fishing in a fun and safe environment. Young anglers are guided by Forest Preserve staff and volunteers as they compete for the biggest fish. Fish stock and bait are provided to all participants, and a limited number of loaner poles are available. Participants are encouraged to bring their own poles if able. Four Lakes Forest Preserve provides several shallow, small lakes that are easily accessible and provide an ideal setting to teach kids about fishing. Hooked on Fun is a free, drop-in event – pre-registration is not required.

Participants and their families will also be engaged through a live animal exhibit with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and fishing-themed education stations, and are eligible for raffle prizes throughout the event. Each participant receives a t-shirt and a participant prize, and the anglers with the biggest fish at the end of the event win a trophy. Additionally, a grilled hotdog lunch will be provided by the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office.
