Jefferson Prairie Church members tackle community projects
POPLAR GROVE – Perhaps you noticed a lot of well-dressed folks in and around town on Sunday. If you stopped to talk to them, you would have found that the yellow t-shirts they wore were not just a fashion statement but also, and more important, a testament to the work that God can do through all of our lives.
On Sunday, Sept. 27, Jefferson Prairie Lutheran Church participated in “God’s Work Our Hands” Sunday.
God’s Work Our Hands is an initiative by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Americain which all the people in the congregations of the ELCA don brightly colored shirts and take to the streets (and parks, gas stations, homes, grocery stores stores-all over!) and work to serve their community and world as the hands of God on earth.
With over four million members in the ELCA, God’s work was done in abundance!
One hundred fifty people from Jefferson Prairie joined forces to complete 11projects on Sunday.
The projects included visits to homebound folks; a concert at Meadow Park Nursing Home; highway clean up-care for the Pelishek-Tiffany Trail; yard work at the Clinton Historical Society;maintenance of one of the cemeteries;decorating grocery bags with messages of love and encouragement;assembling school kits to be sent abroad through Lutheran World Relief; cutting fabric for quilts that will be sent by Lutheran World Relief and also distributed locally to those in need; preparing for a rummage sale to benefit the Skaalen Home in Stoughton, Wis.; and writing cards for service men and women.
After all the work was finished for the day, everyone met back at the church to enjoy a tasty lunch of Sloppy Joes and other delicious fare. All in all it was an inspiring morning filled with love and passion. How fortunate we are to be able to serve one another, doing God’s Work with Our Hands!
