Our Savior’s Lutheran Church

For decades, Our Savior’s Lutheran Church has been blessed with members dedicated to caring for God’s creation.

Groups like the Vegetarians in Motion, The “Do Day Ladies,” the Operations’ Volunteers, and the Green Team are examples of this long-term commitment.

Vegetarians in Motion was founded in 1988 by dedicated Our Savior’s members positively impacting the environment and improving health issues.

The “Do Day Ladies” have met weekly for 40 plus years sewing quilts and making recycled shelving from old pews. In October of 2021, they delivered a record 402 quilts and 300+ kits made from recycled materials to the Lutheran World Relief Organization and Habitat for Humanity.

The past 10 years, Our Savior’s Operations’ Volunteers have made many energy saving lighting changes to the facility.

They have converted to LED bulbs wherever possible, recycled the old bulbs, and installed motion-sensor lighting to save electricity.

More than a decade old, the Green Team has introduced guidelines for kitchen usage to reduce waste in the facility, hosted KNIB’s Semi-Annual Clothing Drive in their parking lot, participated in the Great American Cleanup, and has led Our Savior’s to be designated as a Creation Care Congregation.  Congratulations!

2022 Outstanding Individual Friend of the Environment Award

This award is bestowed upon an Individual who has exhibited a superior commitment to improving the environment through recycling, reusing, renewing resources, and advocacy of the same within the community.

Karen Marsh of Stillman Valley

In 2019, Karen had a goal of collecting 500 pounds of plastic in order to earn a plastic bench for her grandchildren’s 4-H Club.  She successfully did so, and the 4-H Club donated the bench to the Ogle County Fairgrounds.

Since her first bench, she has collected over 4,000 pounds of plastic, earning five5 benches for various non-profit organizations.

Karen spends her personal time and gas money to transport the plastic to various drop-off points because she does not want the plastic to end up in our landfills.

She is currently working with Stillman Valley High School to earn a bench of recycled plastic in their school courtyard.
