Lady Indians Roll Through Season Openers
By Chris Johnson, REPORTER
The first full week of the high school sports winter season is long in the books for the Hononegah Lady Indians and they find themselves exactly where many pundits felt they would be, leading the NIC-10 and sitting with a perfect mark.
The season opening tournament at Dundee Crown High School is the first real chance for Hononegah to see outside the confines of the NIC-10. They know they will have their troubles with Boylan, Harlem and Auburn within the conference, but teams outside the conference who have become victims now, may get another shot at Hononegah when February playoff basketball arrives.
With the win over McHenry starting off the current four-game win streak, 63-37, Hononegah saw what it thought it would. The Lady Indians took control from the opening tip and refused to relinquish it. In the McHenry opener, Hononegah put 20 points on the board in the opening period. McHenry scored nine points. In the second quarter it was much the same, except the Lady Indians’ defense was more restrictive. McHenry scored seven points in the second quarter and trailed Hononegah 39-16 at the break. In the third period McHenry’s offense found a little room to work. They scored one point less in the period then they had the whole game. Hononegah scored 20 in the frame though and maintained control heading into the fourth, up 59-31. The Lady Indians held on for the 63-37 win.
Following the opening night win, the attack continued to be strong for Hononegah as they won again on night two by 30 points over Huntley 57-27. On Nov. 19, the Lady Indians experienced their third double-digit advantage win in a row, this time by 27 points over Algonquin Jacobs. On Tuesday, Nov. 22, the Lady Indians toppled Crystal Lake South and prepared to enter the NIC-10 portion of the 2016 winter schedule with a Tuesday, Nov. 29 match at Rockford Boylan.
The early conference showdown with Boylan could go a long way in determining how successful this season will be for the Hononegah Lady Indians. Whether they can regain the streak that sees them leading the conference season-after-season is yet to be determined. The Tuesday game against Boylan will help Hononegah see where they are much more clearly.
Matches at Belvidere North on Dec. 2 and back home on Dec. 6 to face Belvidere appear on the schedule for Hononegah. On Dec. 9 the Lady Indians play at Jefferson. The next two matches will also help Hononegah see where they stand as they face Auburn on Dec. 13 in Rockton before they head to Machesney Park for a match at Harlem High School on Dec. 15 against the Lady Huskies.
