Meridian CUSD #223 will now keep emergency EpiPens at each school in the district. EpiPens deliver a dose of a medication called epinephrine that can counteract the symptoms of a severe allergic reaction, known as anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is life-threatening if it is left untreated. If an emergency arises in which a student is displaying signs of anaphylaxis, the school Registered Nurse will follow the procedure outlined by a physician for administering the EpiPen in accordance with Public Act 097-0361.

Having this emergency medication on hand will not only provide a safer school environment for our students with diagnosed allergies, but for everyone, since a student may have an unknown allergy. Families of students with diagnosed severe allergies are encouraged to still keep their prescribed EpiPens in the nursing office with the corresponding medication permit on file.
