BELVIDERE – Mr. D’s Magic House on Wheels is reminiscent of a traveling variety show of the Vaudeville era. His 1945 Chevrolet truck turned museum is an attraction all on its own. The exterior and stage are covered with curiosities and photos from around the world.
Perhaps, Mr. D’s inspiration is derived from his late grandfather Jimmy Spence. A soloist who, in fact, traveled the Vaudeville circuit at times working the same events as Harry Houdini.
Mr. D had the unique ability to keep the audience laughing and captivated from start to finish without uttering a single word during this particular show.
According to Mr. D, no two performances are alike, sometimes he does speak. He prefers to keep audiences guessing and coming back for more. He promises they will walk away with a different experience everytime.
Animals and children from the audience were incorporated throughout the show. A 7-year-old Jocelyn Meyers of Belvidere was first up to assist Mr. D during the disappearing dove trick and a 5-year-old Isabella from Elgin helped bring the show to a close by being levitated.
Mr. D’s Amazing house on wheels performed everyday near the Memorial Park Gazebo. Mr. D performed Tuesday through Friday at 12 p.m., 2 p.m., 5 p.m., and 7 p.m. Mr. D also performed on the weekend on Saturday at 4 p.m. 5:30 p.m., 7 p.m., and 8:30 p.m. and on at Sunday 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m.
