The Boone County Arts Council last Saturday dedicated a mural to Sarah J. Ames, considered to be a groundbreaking figure in Boone County’s history. Located at 109 N. State St., Belvidere, the mural was created by Belvidere artist and Everest Satellite High School Principal Mike LaScola. In attendance were current and former law enforcement, as well as members of the Ames family; the mural joins those honoring local legends Fred Schulte and John Lawson.

During the Heritage Days celebration last weekend, the Boone County Arts Council dedicated its newest downtown mural that honored the life and legacy of Sarah J. Ames, who became chief deputy sheriff of Boone County in 1891; appointed by her husband, then-Sheriff Albert T. Ames.

She was known for her grit and courage, performing duties ranging from bailiff to process server, often while carrying a Colt revolver.

Despite her fearsome reputation among inmates, Ames was a strong advocate for prisoner welfare and justice; helped establish support for the elderly, owned a downtown millinery shop; and served as president of the 95th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Association – one of the only women of her era to lead a Civil War veterans group.

The Boone County Arts Council welcomed members of the Ames family, Boone County Sheriff Scott Yunk, and former Sheriffs Duane Wirth And Chuck Rand.
