STATELINE – The Nanaksar Sikh Temple will open in Rockford at 714 3rd Ave on the corner of Kishwaukee Street and 3rd Avenue.
The former Catholic Church will now be a place for religious worship, spiritual lectures, meditation, inter-faith conferences, and to educate people, neighbors, and the overall community with religious tolerance and drug awareness.
The 30,000 square-foot building, which includes a basement with two additional stories, is currently under renovation. During the renovation, the Sikh Temple will preserve all religious symbols and pictures belonging to the faith of Christianity and donate them to local Christian Churches.
“Hopefully, the temple will be open for worship in the middle of September,” Nanaksar Sikh Temple coordinator Baba Ji said.
However, the grand opening for the Sikh Temple will not be until the middle of April in 2016.
This will be the first Sikh Temple in the area. Before, people would have to drive to Chicago, Milwaukee, or Madison to find such a place of worship. Now, the hour and a half drive will be limited to a 15 minute drive.
