North Boone Faces Boylan in Class 3A Regional
By Chris Johnson, REPORTER
Class 3A is where the IHSA Selection Committee determined the 10-seed North Boone Lady Vikings would have to compete, as the 2016 Girls’ Volleyball Regionals set-up their first matches. With the contest against six-seed Rockford Boylan played on Monday, Oct. 24, details are unavailable as to how things turned out in the opening round game. The winner will move on to face three-seed Stillman Valley in the Belvidere Regional. Looking at numbers and taking a peek at where the teams finished the regular season, it would appear the Lady Titans were favored to advance to the Belvidere Regional Semi-final match against the three-seed Lady Cardinals.
Boylan finished the NIC-10 season with a 9-4 mark. Their overall mark of 13-11 pushed them into the six-seed position, rather than somewhere higher. The Lady Titans closed the 2016 regular season with a loss to the Belvidere North Lady Blue Thunder two-sets-to-one. Prior to that, they knocked off Rockford Auburn and Wauconda in back-to-back matches. North Boone had its troubles competing in the Big Northern Conference this season. The Lady Vikings closed the 2016 regular season with a 0-10 Conference record and a 4-23 overall mark.
On Sept. 28, North Boone beat South Beloit in three games. On Oct. 15, the Lady Vikings picked up their final win of the regular season as they defeated Rockford Christian Life two games to one. Since upsets can occur in the State Playoffs, the possibility that the Lady Vikings pulled one off on Monday over the heavily-favored Lady Titans does exist. The win would then put them in front of Stillman Valley. A further upset could mean the Lady Vikings would get their crack at the Genoa-Kingston Lady Cogs and a chance to claim the Belvidere High School Girl’s 3A Regional Title.
The winner from Belvidere will move on to Freeport for the Class 3A Sectional Round which begins on Tuesday, Nov. 1.
