The 2022-2023 boys’ basketball season couldn’t have gotten off to a much better start than it has for the Pecatonica Indians.

After routing the Aquin Bulldogs 67-25 for their sixth consecutive win, the Indians kept it going with a win over a solid Dakota Indians squad.  On Monday, Dec. 19, Dakota held an overall record of 6-4.  Pecatonica, still with a zero in their loss column, were the early favorites in this one.  Dakota wouldn’t roll over so easily, however.

Pecatonica put their offense on display in the opening quarter.  Despite having more than three quarters left to play, it wound up being a crucial point in the final outcome.

Pecatonica outscored Dakota 22-15 in the first as they took the seven-point differential into the second.

The Pecatonica offense was even better in the second, as they outscored Dakota 25-14.  The first half had all the appearances of an upcoming blowout as Pecatonica took a 47-29 lead into the halftime break.

Whether it was halftime adjustments or Pecatonica getting complacent, the second half would go much differently than the first.  Dakota flipped the momentum coming out of the break as they outscored Pecatonica 20-11 in the third.

Pecatonica’s offense wasn’t able to bring that same spark in the second half, as they were unable to reach the twenty-point mark they had met in the first two quarters.  If it weren’t for a big time performance from Pecatonica senior, Korbin Gann, this one may have slipped through their fingertips.

Dakota continued to fight back until the very end, but it was too little, too late as Pecatonica held on for a 73-64 victory. It was Gann who led the way for the Indians with 29 points, seven rebounds, and three blocks.

Drew Williams was next up with 15 points, to go along with three steals.  Jaxon Diedrich posted 13 points, eight rebounds, and three assists in the victory.

Pecatonica will be at home on Wednesday, December 28, to play host to the Galena Pirates.
