Pecatonica claims second in NUIC North

Four players struck for double digits this past week as the Pecatonica Indians boys basketball team knocked off their sometimes partner Durand, 73-45.
The match was physical. Free throw shooting became the way much of the early scoring actually occurred for the host Indians. Pecatonica attempted 13 foul shots in the first period.
Six players contributed to building the Indians advantage through the first eight minutes of play. The hosts moved in front 18-11.
A lot more offense was in store for the Indians in the second period of play. The free throw attempts were replaced by field goal attempts and Pecatonica converted on most of the looks they were given.
The Indians put in 23 points in the frame, but allowed the Bulldogs to have their best offensive period of the night, helping them stay in range of their Friday night host. Durand entered the break down twelve points, 41-29.
Sometimes adjustments can be made at the half that can have the effect of turning the flow of a game around and help a team refocus. For Durand, that unfortunately wasn’t the case.
The Bulldogs were held to six points in the third quarter. Pecatonica ran the floor and pumped in 25, dominating the period and pushing the lead well out of reach with a period to play, up 66-35.
A lot of time was shared by non-starters in the Friday night match’s final minutes, but there weren’t as many points scored, comparatively.
The two teams combined for 17 points in the fourth, with the visiting Bulldogs winning the period by a ten-seven margin. Pecatonica won the game though, by nearly 30, 73-45.
Tre’von Stifter and Bo Seaton led the Indians scorers with 13 points. They were supported by Trent Hetland who knocked down twelve and Hunter Hoffman who scored ten.
Jacob Allison ended his night with nine points scored for Pecatonica. Gabe Howard kicked in six. Korbin Mann had four with three points scored each by Bryce Fitzanko and Briaun Green.
The Indians converted ten of 19 free throw attempts, with most of those tries taking place in the first half. Pecatonica attempted 15 foul shots before the break.
Durand was paced by Alex Montalvan who chipped in 13 points. Trenton Taylor scored nine with six each for Aidan Snider and Carson Leman.
The Bulldogs fell to Pecatonica earlier in the week as well. On Tuesday, March 9, Pecatonica pushed back the Bulldogs 69-55.
The Indians closed down 2021 activities with a second place showing in the NUIC North, supported by a 9-3 season mark.
Durand fell to 2-8 in the NUIC North and slipped to 3-9 on the 2021 winter season. Freeport Aquin finished in first place, two losses better than Pecatonica in the conference.
There was no playoff system in place this year as a result of Covid19. The IHSA will record final win-loss totals and register and file conference championship information, probably with an asterisk affixed.
