Pecatonica Elementary “Unlocks Your Heart” for Lions of Illinois Foundation
PECATONICA – How many keys do you have in your pocket or laying around that are no longer needed? That was the question posed by the Lions of Illinois Foundation for their ongoing campaign “Unlock Your Heart”, to collect and recycle old keys to benefit the Comprehensive Low Vision Programs for Youth. The Pecatonica Lions put out the challenge to the Pecatonica Elementary school and boy did they deliver. The students collected keys from 4/6 until 4/22, Earth Day, and collected an unbelievable number of 4909 keys! The winning class was Mrs. Amanda Brandenburg’s 4th grade class that collected 732. They beat out the second place class by only 90 keys. The Pecatonica Lions treated the winning class to an ice cream treat at 3rd Street Station.
The Unlock Your Heart campaign is continuing year round to collect any keys or key fobs for recycling. Recycling buckets have been placed in several businesses around Pecatonica. Currently keys can be dropped off at the Pecatonica Hardware, US Bank, Mike Freier Country Financial, and Topway. This recycling program along with our continuing eyeglass, hearing aids, ink cartridges, and cell phone recycling continues to provide needed funds to support the low vision and hearing programs through the Lions of Illinois Foundation.
