The restored WWII Victory Roll has a home finally at the Pecatonica Library.

The WWII Victory Roll that was restored by Pecatonica Historical Society finally has a permanent home.

The board of photos was originally created in 1942 by Pecatonica citizens to honor local men and women serving in the military.

Back in 2023, the Pecatonica Historical Society unveiled the recently restored Victory Roll at their WWII Open House on Veterans Day. The board was in a dilapidated state after being stored in several locations since the 1940s. It was last on display in 2011, but several photos were removed.

The Collections Room in the library was its location until 2022 when a small group of historical society volunteers set out to restore it close to the original condition. It took months of searching the internet, ancestry files, and family members to locate photos to replace damaged or missing ones from the board.

The next obstacle for completion was framing and finding museum-quality acrylic to preserve the 4-foot by 6-foot board. Jerry Jansen and Gene “Butch” Boomer volunteered their craftsmanship and time to construct a frame.

After careful thought and with the library’s permission, the Victory Roll has a permanent resting place in the library. Located on a wall that can be viewed easily, the over 200 photos of local loved ones are posted along with alphabetical keys to enable people to locate specific photos.

Many thanks to all those involved in restoring this historic symbol of those local men and women who served in WWII.

Please visit the Pecatonica Public Library during open hours, Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., to view this special piece of history.
