Lord Farquaad is shocked and disgusted when Shrek confesses his feelings for Princess Fiona during Belvidere North’s production of Shrek the Musical.

“This was one of the best, if not the best, casts that I have ever had the chance to work with,” said Dr. Phillip Vermillion, co-director of Shrek the Musical. “ All of the students–cast, crew, orchestra–everybody stepped up to take ownership of the show.

“It’s always amazing to witness the process from auditions to the point where I can sit in the house and watch the students run a well polished product. Our parent volunteers proved to be an invaluable asset with publicity, props, and costumes to further enhance the production.

“The cast members and guests seemed to have an excellent time at the Swamp Party. Guests created a take-home gingerbread craft with Gingy; took pictures on stage with Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey; interacted with some of the set pieces backstage; ate an ogre cupcake and drank swamp juice; and had a dance party with other characters in our warm-up area. Even the directors seemed to have a good time.”

The Saturday afternoon performance was just the beginning of a long day for the cast, orchestra, and crew of the show yet no one seemed to mind. The show ran smoothly with the actors performing with verve. They only had a very short period of time before they were at the Swamp Party interacting with children – many of whom had dressed in special outfits – playing games, having photos taken with the kids, and dancing.

They were able to take a short breath before they were throwing themselves into the evening performance of Shrek the Musical.
