Recent wins over Prophetstown and Amboy helped assure that the South Beloit Sobos Boys’ Basketball Team had enough firepower to compete with most of the teams they face in the Northeastern Athletic Conference. In losses to Polo and Byron, South Beloit ended with nearly 50 points a game. In wins over Prophetstown and Amboy, the team averaged over 65 points a game.

Playing in a smaller Conference, the 65-point per game average is going to win a lot of games for you and South Beloit has had the chance to make things happen this season.

Seniors control the success of this year’s team. Dillon Hagstrom, Antonio Hickman and Troy Walmer are just three of those leaders. With leadership, comes confidence in many scenarios. A capable team with an average record has the ability to rise when the post-season begins. South Beloit has the right pieces in place. Finding a way to make them all work together will be a challenge the team can attempt to address over the next few weeks.

With regular Conference action taking a break this weekend, the Sobos prepare to invite in teams from across north-central and north-eastern Illinois as the annual Martin Luther King Memorial Tournament tips-off. The first round of games will be played on Saturday, Jan. 14. The contest concludes on Monday, Jan. 16. The regular season Conference schedule revisits South Beloit after that.

Between Friday, Jan. 20 and Saturday, Jan. 28, the Sobos play four games. Three of those matches will be on the road, with the swing beginning at Elgin-Harvest Christian Academy. On Jan. 21, Luther North visits South Beloit for the Sobos only home game in that stretch. On Jan. 27, South Beloit heads to Arlington Heights and a meeting with Christian Liberty. A day later they swing back to Elgin for a meeting with Westminster Christian.

The Jan. 31 home game against Alden-Hebron opens a brief home stand for South Beloit in which they will face Stillman Valley on Feb. 2, Illinois Math & Science on Feb. 4 and Mooseheart on Feb. 6. A quick stop in Oregon on Feb. 14 marks the final road game of the year for South Beloit as they return home on Feb. 17 to take on Aurora Christian. The IHSA Boys’ Basketball State Playoffs begin following completion of the regular season schedule for South Beloit.
