October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. With that in mind, the ”Women at Work” branch of the Stateline Chamber of Commerce hosted “Pink Out,” on Thursday, Oct. 20, at NorthPointe Health and Wellness Center. Nearly all of the women in attendance wore pink tee shirts in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month. The event included a soup and sandwich lunch provided by Main Street Meats, and drawings for door prizes.
Doctor Julie Virks, who specializes in Obstetrics and Gynecology and is a member of NorthPointe Health and Wellness Center, was the guest speaker. Virks gave a power-point presentation that defined the risk factors regarding breast cancer among women, including alcohol and tobacco use, working night shifts, chest radiation and use of estrogen. She recommended the website www.Brightpink.org for information regarding risk categories and statistics.
Virks discussed options for screening, including self-examinations, clinical exams, mammograms, ultra-sound and MRI testing.
Following the program, guests were invited to take a tour of the Mammography Center at NorthPointe.
