Twenty five years ago Toni Brown opened Stepping Stones Child’s Center. The first location was at the Rockton Community Center. As her business grew, Brown realized she needed more room. She moved the business to a larger facility on Main Street in Roscoe.
The day care and pre-school continued to grow. When a large vacant building at 11364 2nd St. in Roscoe became available in 2004, Brown took another leap. After extensive renovations and construction of a kid-friendly play area, Stepping Stones was home to stay.
The 25th anniversary of the center was celebrated on Aug. 6.Hundreds of visitors walked through the halls and visited classrooms.
Kids played in the bounce houses, courtesy of True Value Hardware, enjoyed pizza from Marks Pizza in Rockton and Anna Marias in Roscoe, and visited with everyone’ favorite clown, Pickles.
Inside, an art show featuring work by the budding artists lined the hallway.
Many of those attendingwere graduates of the school.Others were parents of children currently enrolled at Stepping Stones.Brown employs 33 teachers and office personnel.Several staff membersare former students.
“The best part of owning Stepping Stones has been the opportunity to watch kids grow and develop. It’s rewarding to know you are giving them a good foundation for kindergarten. ” Brown said.
“The children not only learn their ABC’s and numbers, they learn socializing skills and the proper way to behave.”
Brown said she is pleased with her decision to open Stepping Stones 25 years ago.“I can’t imagine doing anything I would enjoy more.”
