Go Harlem!
The Harlem High School 2024/25 Girls Varsity Bowling team members were recognized by Machesney Park village board members on April 1.

Machesney Park residents proved their support of Steve Johnson for mayor in the Illinois Consolidated Election held April 1 and was awarded a third term with over 75 percent of the vote.

At the village board meeting held April 7, Johnson had this to say; “First this evening I want to thank everyone for the overwhelming support

“I received April 2… this shows that residents have widespread approval for the direction our administration is headed and the progress the village has had in the last eight years.

“Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to serve the village again and move Machesney Park forward with positive momentum for the future. The sky is the limit for the Village and I cannot wait for the next new addition for the village.”

In other business, resident Tim Gentry was approved to become a member of the village’s Planning and Zoning Commission.

A $10.2 million-dollar “balanced budget” for Fiscal Year 2025/26, which starts on May 1, 2025, was approved, effective on that date.

The village board and the mayor recognized the Harlem Girls Bowling Team at the meeting.

Johnson said, “At this time would the coaches and players come up to the podium to accept this award. It is my honor to recognize this evening the Harlem High School 2024/25 Girls Varsity Bowling team for winning the State Championship!

I personally want to thank all the coaches, players and parents for all of their time and dedication they put into this team’s season, which ultimately resulted in this team achieving the state championship.”

A plaque by the mayor reads as follows: “It is my honor to present this plaque in recognition of the Harlem High School 2024/25 Girls Varsity Bowling Team for winning the conference championship with a 9-0 record, winning the regional championship, and the state championship by 216 pins as a result of determination, dedication, and commitment. Congratulations from the Village Board!”

Johnson also wanted to remind that the North Park Fire Department “is having a dedication ceremony for the new station on April 17 at 10 a.m. on 1011 Harlem Road. I hope to see everyone there.

He further mentioned that “next, I was honored to attend the unveiling of the renovation of the Teen Center at Carlson Boys and Girls Club on April 3,” and noted

“Aaron’s Inc. surprised the teens at the club with a $20,000 dollar gift makeover that included new furniture, arcade games, concession machines, 3-D printers, VR headsets and gaming systems, which were all on the teens’ wish list that they had supplied to Aarons Inc.

Mayor Johnson, as is always the case, ended the meeting by reminding everyone how important it is to shop locally as “It helps your local businesses communities year round!”
