Summer fun offered in a variety of ways
The welcome mat to summer fun has been rolled out in the stateline.
On Wednesday, June 7 the Rockton River Market opened in Settlers Park, complete with a nice variety of vendors, along with “Music in the Park.” One of the evening’s highlights was the introduction of DeeDees’s new trailer, named “Hazel.” A ribbon cutting marked Hazel’s first public appearance and proved to be a popular spot to visit.
Vintage Vinyl kicked off the best of musical genres that will be covered every Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m.
This event returns on June 21 as That Gurl takes the stage on the gazebo. More musical acts are coming in future weeks including Shuffle This, Jon Bon Stamos, Blind Date, Dirty Fishnet Stockings, Minimal, Bill and Jim’s Most Excellent Acoustic Adventure, Rock Surfers, Nauti Nauti, Bree Morgan and The Sensations. All music starts at 6 p.m.
St. Andrew Lutheran Church on Rockton Road is inviting the public to the “Common Ground Summerfest.” Picnic foods, games, and fun are promised on Saturday, June 24 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. In the case of challenging weather a rain date has been set for June 25 from noon until 3.
The Stateline Chamber of Commerce is hosting the Stateline Business Expo on June 24 and 25. This event is the perfect place to showcase local businesses, youth organizations, churches, and non-profit groups or organizations, food options and entertainment including live performances by local talent and various teams.
Find out what each has to offer and visit with those who make each successful inside Hononegah High School’s field house. The Expo is welcoming visitors on Saturday from 9 a.m, until 4 p.m., with Sunday hours of 10 a.m., until 3 p.m.
Rockton Township Historical Society is a staple of historical information. Dr. John D. Ulferts, retired superintendent, principal of the Shirland School district is giving a presentation on the D-Day invasion for the June program. Learn about this time in history at the Carriage House at the RTHS Green Street Museum on Monday evening, June 26 at 7 p.m.
June is the anniversary month of the D-Day invasion of WW11. On June 6, 1944 the Allied forces launched the largest amphibious invasion in the history of warfare. The D-Day assault began the liberation of France and Europe from German occupation. Dr. Ulferts has studied several aspects of WW11. Ulferts is the author of the book, “Always Remember – WW11 Through Veterans’ Eyes.” This book is a compilation of stories of 140 WW11 veterans. Copies of the book will be for sale at the night of the presentation.
As always the museum is open for tours Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. from April until September. The Green Street Museum is filled with artifacts, news articles, and many interesting pieces of historical value. Call 815-624-8200 for more information or to reserve a different time to take a tour.
Shirland Fireworks is starting off the creation of new family memories ahead of the town’s annual Fourth of July celebration. On Saturday, June 24, music begins at 6 p.m., and food vendors will be on site to set a festive tone, all prior to fireworks filling the night sky at 9:30 p.m. The fireworks are sponsored by Freedom Events! A rain date is set for June 25.
On Independence Day begin with a delicious pancake breakfast at Shirland United Methodist Church from 6:30 a.m. until 9 p.m.
Debi Wines, Parade Coordinator is seeking participants clubs, businesses, fire departments to bring vehicles into the parade, bands, scout troops, clubs or organizations, explorer groups, politicians or anyone with a willingness to share an eye-catching float, tractors, bikes and trikes, motorized vehicles, or horses are welcome to add to this very popular, patriotically fun event! The parade is planned for 10 a.m. Participants are asked to stop at the fire station between 8:45- 9 a.m. For parade line up and directions.
Aspiring artists ages 7-12 years old have an opportunity to attend a drawing art camp at Jill Rae Finally Art. Cassie Branecki will lead classes through the basics of drawing Monday through Thursday, from 9 a.m. to Noon. From July 10-13. Camp cost is $168, which covers everything needed to learn.
Hononegah Community High School’s Class of 1983 is invited to take part in reunion activities. Mark your calenders now for Friday, July 21 where an informal get together is set to happen at 6 p.m. at the Whiffletree. On Saturday, July 22 former classmates can meet at Firehouse Pub in Roscoe at 6 p.m. Light appetizers are being provided at the Saturday event.
Extra fun comes in the form of a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle. Donations are appreciated to help cover some of the costs associated with reunion plans.
