The IHSA says the winter sports season “officially” ended on March 18, as the final four from the 3A and 4A boys’ basketball world battled for state titles. The final buzzers marked the end of another winter and the beginning of a new spring with a new chance at a fresh start to a season.

The North Boone Vikings winter sports season has been at rest for weeks now. The time off allowed for preparations to be made as the spring season stands, waiting to be the final piece of the high school athletic puzzle, for this year’s seniors.

Mother Nature hasn’t been willing to allow many games to go on however. After an arguably mild winter leading up to the first few weeks of March, snow appeared and delays followed.

Some indoor track and field meets have been held to open the spring. On March 8, the boys’ varsity track team had a scheduled season opener as a participant in the Boone County Indoor Invite at Belvidere North High School.

There wasn’t a lot of action after that though. Into the first full weekend of the season, the diamond’s melt-off helped make footing concerns a reality, and the conditions deemed unsafe to play.

On March 13, the boys’ baseball team saw their match against NIC-10 neighbor Belvidere cancelled as a result of the unplayable conditions. The team experienced the weather’s influence again on March 16, as the ability to play against Harvard was challenged.

The girls’ softball team had a scheduled match at Belvidere on March 17. Other activities which were to occur March 18 included a track meet at Byron involving both the boys’ and girls’ teams as well as a scheduled contest on the soccer field.

The Lady Vikings were scheduled to be a part of the early-season Harvard Tournament with game play beginning at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.

The immediate outlook, over the next couple weeks, reportedly say conditions could be favorable for outdoor activity.
