Volunteers are needed to walk the shorelines, and others with canoes, kayaks or boats to pull out the trash that inevitably finds its way into the Rock River during the Rock River Sweep from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 10.

It does seem we are having an effect, as the volume of trash collected each year is about equal or slightly less than in previous years.

Meet at the shelterhouse behind First National Bank and Trust, in Settlers Park, Rockton. Get assignments for specific cleanup areas.

River cleanup involves a  10-mile section from the bridge on Prairie Hill Road, downstream to Riverside Park in Roscoe. Gather all garbage collected at the shelterhouse, estimate quantities and recycle or dispose.

Gloves, trash bags, insect repellant, snacks, door prizes will be provided. If you have gloves from last year, please bring them. Extra plastic bags to hold aluminum cans help with the job of sorting. We will order long-sleeved t-shirts for those who RSVP and tell us number and sizes of shirts needed.

We welcome all those (any age) who have helped before and any new people who are interested in helping clean up the environment!  It’s fun!

Refreshments and door prizes may keep us busy until around 1 p.m.

RSVP: Loren Floto at (815) 289-1152.
