Belvidere High School hosted the IHSA Sectional Cheer Championship on Saturday, Jan. 29. They hosted 56 teams from the state of Illinois and the finalists were able to punch their ticket to the IHSA State Championship.

“It is very awesome that we have been selected right here in the Stateline area!” said Josh Sternquist, BHS director of Athletics.

It was a terrific competition with every team doing their best and the judges had their work cut out for them in deciding which teams to send on to State. The top five teams in each division (Small Team, Medium Team, Large Team, and Coed Team)

The amazing teams from this Sectional competition who will be continuing in the competition at State level are:

Small Team: Fifth Place – Richmond-Burton, Fourth Place – Byron, Third Place Knoxville, Second Place Poplar Grove–North Boone, and First Place Johnsburg.

Medium Team: Fifth Place – Crystal Lake–South, Fourth Place Lake Villa-Lakes, Third Place – Antioch, Second Place – Grayslake-North, and First Place Crystal Lake-Central.

Large Team: Fifth Place – Rockton-Hononegah, Fourth Place – Algonquin-Jacobs, Third Place – Lake Zurich, Second Place Huntley, and First Place Hampshire.

Coed Team: Fifth Place – Libertyville, Fourth Place – Fox Lake-Grant, Third Place – Palatine-Fremd, Second Place – South Elgin, and First Place Belvidere North.

“We’re going to State!” was the celebratory shout heard multiple times during the awards ceremonies.

A big shout out to our BHS staff! We hosted almost 700 student athletes/coaches and thousands of fans/spectators. The top five finalists per division are off to IHSA State in Bloomington. And the BHS community did great work in planning, staffing, and being able to provide answers.
